In Six Questions: Meet the Founder Sage

Q: Tell me about a significant personal experience that shaped your view on life and spirituality?

A: When I was in middle school, I for the first time learned that right before I was born, my mother and relatives had survived a natural disaster by making a split-second decision to evacuate. They chose to act courageously despite the confusion and lack of clear guidance; despite the chaos and many were misled to stay home, through a touch of blessing and their decisive judgment to taking a risk to run to a higher building, they survived. I had a moment of euphoria and a profound sense of liberation when I heard it. I wish I had known it earlier—it explained about my intrinsic draw toward spirituality growing up in a secular environment with no religious influence in my circle when I was a child. I was gravitated toward something beyond the surface of everyday life. I somehow felt that questions of spirituality and metaphysics were more important than the regular schoolwork to which I was exposed, and that there must be other layers of truths.

This kind of moments made me realize that life’s transitory nature and uncertainties isn’t something to fear—it’s something that can empower us. The fact that such small moments and choices could determine whether or not I’d be here today gave me a sense of reverence for life. It fueled my curiosity and my drive to explore the spiritual side of existence. The journey of living a life inclusive of spirituality has never been a smooth ride. I have doubted before, but the incredible serendipities and blessed events in life I encountered have guided me to an enchanting path. I once tried to brush off some of the signs as mere coincidences, but their persistence and the sheer number of them led me to realize that I don't recognize there has been some kind of special guidance in them, I would truly be blind and closing my eyes to something significant.

Q: How do you balance pursuing your dreams with the practicalities of life?

A: It’s all about balance. I’ve always believed that idealism and pragmatism can coexist. You must be careful of not being too much of a perfectionist. Just because you have a full-time job that may not be your dream work right now doesn’t mean you can’t work on what you’re passionate about on the side. Time management is key. Even in a dream career, you would often need to perform hard work and mundane tasks, so being realistic in planning is important. It takes literally sitting down and putting it on a planner for how you spend the hours of the day.

In the current era of advanced computing technology and artificial intelligence, you almost have to plan and modify your plan by the month to achieve your dream, and may need to modify your definition of a perfect job by the quarter. For example, someone who dreamed of becoming a top graphic designer because they loved creating visuals in 2020 would today may re-evaluate and realize that instead of focusing solely on becoming a traditional graphic designer, to shift toward roles that embrace technology like UX/UI design as the those might be better aligned with future demand. Or, someone who wanted to become a top investment advisor in 2020, believing they'll spend their career analyzing stock market trends and provide advice based on market data, would find themselves by 2022 reassessing this goal due to the arrival of AI ( Robo-advisors can now process vast datasets in seconds and make better investment recommendations without human bias), and pivot to more tech-focused role like a quantitative finance expert. And the list goes on.

Q: How has your spiritual journey evolved over the years?

A: My spiritual journey has been a lifelong exploration, influenced by various experiences and traditions. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of studying Tibetan Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, and Christianity with experts and community members alike. Each tradition has offered me a unique perspective on life’s mysteries and how to approach challenges with grace. I am open to learning more about other traditions. I am also vigilant about how spirituality, religion and science are defined, and the line between ordinary vs. supernatural/miracle events. Even the advancements we pride ourselves on today including those at the quantum level, may one day proven to be a primitive and superficial approach in the grander scheme of understanding. The scientific method as we know it today is not the absolute detector of truth in all the layers of life and the universe, and it has inherent limitations. No one has all the answers, and even if the ultimate answer is revealed one day, you might not fully grasp it. That’s what makes spirituality so fascinating—it’s a never-ending journey of discovery. Even in the ordinary course of life, you see that when the human ego dissolves, a truly magical life begins.

Q: What advice would you give to someone overcoming challenges?

A: I often remind myself that the decision of giving up on a dream can often come from just a few moments of negativity or doubt in your mind, and can significantly impact the course of your entire life and overall contentment; surrendering a life time of happiness to that seems like a poor trade to me. Many times you may not know what you are truly capable of. Keep in mind that many celebrities and highly successful people often have a laundry list of failed projects that never see the light of day, but also keep in mind that what may set them apart is the ability to not let these failures hold them back. Life is full of uncertainties, and it’s how we respond that defines us.

Happiness and success start from within, grounded in a resilient positive mindset. This mindset isn’t something that just happens; it’s a skill that is cultivated over time through persistence and self-awareness. Unfortunately, emotional resilience and effective time management are not typically taught in the formal education system; they are developed through personal experience. Therefore it's important to teach yourself and also seek feedback and support from trusted friends and mentors. However, it's also essential to critically evaluate the advice or help you receive, as people may project their own wishes or issues onto others; great intentions may not always lead to great solutions. Knowing yourself, being honest about your strengths, talents and weaknesses, and making the best use of your time and circumstances are key.

Q: How do you plan your days and how do you plan for work-life balance?

A: At the moment, I only plan three months ahead. Sure, I’ve got a long-term vision, but I break tasks down into manageable, short-term chunks. Honestly, planning too far ahead feels risky these days—everything from personnel and finances to technology can change faster than you can say 'pivot.' It’s like trying to map out next year’s weather—you’re bound to get surprised! When it comes to work-life balance, I take an unconventional approach. I plan leisure days throughout the month, but if I’m in the zone, I might work through the weekends. Once you’re in the flow, it’s best to keep going. There’s no magical number of days off that guarantees relaxation—it’s about what feels right for you. If you miss out on something, like I did with a couple of trips and a Taylor Swift concert, just make it up. (Being also a childless cat lady I know how to bounce back..). Here’s hoping I can squeeze in some fun before the year’s out!

Q: What inspired you to start this non-profit?

A: The non-profit was born from my deep belief that life is a precious gift, a conviction that has shaped my personal journey and work. My dedication to spirituality and personal growth was strengthened during my time serving in leadership positions of groups focused on mindfulness and spiritual practices. These experiences fueled my passion for the exploration of spirituality and its integration into daily life. I believe that spirituality isn't about finding definitive answers or reaching a particular conclusion, but rather maintaining an open mind and an ongoing willingness to learn and grow.

On a surface level, technology has significantly advanced our lives—improving health, communication, and efficiency, and bringing us closer to what once seemed like science fiction, with interplanetary travel on the horizon. Yet, these advancements don’t provide all the answers. They are just a small piece of the larger picture.

I believe that true transformation starts from within. By building inner resilience and practicing self-mastery, we can unlock our best selves and live our best lives. At the same time, we remain open to the guidance of the universe, whatever form that may take. Over the years, my spiritual journey has taught me valuable lessons about balance, focus, and resilience, and these principles form the foundation of our organization's mission. When we deeply understand what truly matters—whether it's our connection to the world, our beliefs, our relationships, or our passions—and align our actions with these core pursuits, we create a meaningful life. This balanced approach between material and spiritual aspects leads to a life filled with purpose, harmony, and impact.
